Now days there are thicker millimeter rash guards that can do that.

yeah it can be. it provides another layer of materials, and it can also help if your wetsuit is too big

A plain old rash guard wont’ provide warmth but the newer thermal ones will.
Here’s where I shop for rash guards:

Thats funny that you ask that question because i used to wear a whole body rash guard underneath my wetsuit when i was growing up. Now, i dont even bother because the suits they make these days are warm enough! I always thought rash guards to be uncomfortable! especialy when you wear them in the summer, just shorts and a rash guard to surf in, they would keep me Colder than if i wasnt wearing one.
but i guess it depends on every one.

Can’t hurt. I used to wear one under my old zipperless 3/2, made it a little easier to get out of. Not sure it added much warmth though. I have a couple 1.5 mm tops and a 2 mm vets that would work but my new suit (O’Neill 4/3 Heat) doesn’t need any additional help

yes they are also used as a second skin

rash guards help with warmth, but really the thermo rash guards are what you want for the true heat difference. I recomend the hotline thermo tops because of the way they sew their seams on the neckline to the hood, so comfortable I could sleep in them.

Not really. IN fact, the excess water under your wetsuit will make you colder. Your body must warm up the extra water. However, the rashguard will protect you from rubbing against the wetsuit.
