Originally created to protect a surfer's skin from irritating surfboard wax, rash guards are a tee-shirt style swim top. They later gained popularity for all types and ages of beach-goers. Made of tightly-woven nylon and spandex, rash guards are a lightweight, antibacterial, and fast-drying form of sun protection. Rash guards differ from swim shirts by closely fitting the wearer; swim shirts generally have a looser fit. Many types of swim shirts and rash guards offer a UV protection factor of 50 +, the highest possible rating.
Now, more than ever, protecting your skin from the sun's radiation is vital. Harmful ultraviolet radiation is penetrating the Earth's depleted ozone layer in larger quantities and damaging your skin. Skin cancer diagnoses are on the rise worldwide—2 to 3 million confirmed diagnoses are reported every year, and one out of every three cancer cases is a skin cancer diagnosis.
