I have very little budget. I want to know what is the best sewing machine for making swimwear? Is the old Singer 20ux143 ok? I have a Brother sewing machine and threads gets stuck under the cloth all the time so I wanted to get a new one. specifically 2nd hand coz like I said, I have very little budget.
Swimwear fabric needs nothing more than a good zig zag machine, the proper needles and a few tweaks to the tensions. Are you using the correct needle in your brother? Swimwear fabrics are best sewn with ballpoint needles made for stretch fabric. These needles are available at fabric and notions stores everywhere. Additionally, the needle and bobbin tensions may need a bit of tweaking until the stitch is forming correctly. It sounds like the stitch is unbalanced for the fabric and either the needle tension needs to be tightened or the bobbin tension needs to be loosened. When you pull the bobbin thread the bobbin tension should have just a slight grip on the thread, if it grabs tight, it's too tight, if the thread reels off with no grip it's ti loose. A drop in bobbin will have the set screw visible at the front of where the bobbin goes in. A separate bobbin casing will have a small screw on the casing. Remember the old expression "lefty loosey and righty-tighty" and loosen or tighten the screw accordingly. Use a zig zag stitch to sew all seams and hems. A good zig zag is all you need to sew stretchy seams and hems in swimwear. Keep the width at about 3 mm and the length at 1 to1.5 mm. The closer length gives you more stretch in your seam.
If you want to sew lots of swimwear than a serger is a good investment. It seams, trims and overcasts in one step and if you use a woolly nylon or textured polyester thread that stretch will be built into the seam. You will still use zig zag stitching for hems and finishing.
Hope that helped
