Is a jiu jitsu rash guard neccesary?

I just started training in jiu jitsu and while shopping for my gi I saw the selection of rash guards. I was wondering if while training in a gi the rash guard is really needed. A little help would be appreciated. Thanks!
It's not essential, but some find it to be a comfortable layer between your skin and the rough gi.

I just wear an Under Armour under-shirt. It keeps you cool and I’ve never had any rashes. I wouldn’t want to train without it since it would probably be kind of rough on my skin.
