Can babies scuba dive?

Question by In Your Face Charlie!: Can babies scuba dive?
My husband and I were saying how she would be more comfortable in a warm poop in a scuba suit. Then I trolled, "Can babies scuba dive?" If they can how old do they have to be?

No. Some scuba training agencies will allow children as young as 8 years old to paddle around in a pool with scuba equipment, and other several agencies will train children 10-14 years old to dive in open water with a certified adult. 15 is generally considered the youngest "adult" certification age.

For various reasons I don't believe in training most children under 15 to dive, and even some of those who are 15 or older. The agencies who actively promote training children younger and younger justify it by stating that there is no research that shows it is unsafe for children to dive. Of course not, since experimenting on young children to study the effects of hyperbaric exposure would be expensive and medically unethical. Apart from the unknown physiological effects, the psychological stresses of dealing with problems underwater could also be too much for a young child to deal with. A 1996 quote by Charles Edmonds, MD states it perfectly: "The appropriate response to a life-threatening situation...is not to burst into tears."

Larry "Harris" Taylor gave a presentation at the Our World Underwater trade show in 2001 that contains many interesting and (to me) convincing points regarding why he personally does not train children under 18 to dive. To quote a few of his statements in that presentation:

"Parents should wait until they trust their child to drive the family's most expensive automobile to the dive-training site."

and

"Adolescence, like pregnancy, is a temporary, survivable condition that has so many uncertainties associated with the event that diving is best avoided until this condition is past."

The entire presentation can be found at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lpt/kids.htm

Sorry to go a bit off the deep end, but training young children to dive is one of my hot buttons.

Planning a SCUBA seminar?

Question by Another IT Guy: Planning a SCUBA seminar?
If you were planning your own SCUBA diving "seminar" to about a class of non-divers who want to try it out, what would your agenda be? Say for about a 1-hour lecture for up to 20-25 people. I was thinking I'd do a few minutes on history, then maybe 10-minute blocks on equipment, safety, basic skills, the types of dives, the physiology of diving, how to get certified, etc...

Most people probably would not be interested in in alot of that stuff. If you are trying to get them interested in the sport, use alot of pictures / videos of fish, reefs, remind them of the exotic places that people go to dive, highlight the whole caribbean beach vacation. May also consider doing a pool session for those that really seem to be interested.

What do you think? Answer below!
