Here's my newly made vintage scuba diving style smooth rubber beavertail wetsuit. The rubber is 7 mm thick. The jacket has the beavertail flap which tucks between your legs and is held in place with clasps. The smooth rubber boots and hood are also made of the thick 7mm smooth rubber. The scuba diving wetsuit is largely determined by the individual needs and desires of the scuba diver, whether he or she is new to the diving fraternity or a seasoned veteran. One of the first and foremost issues that need consideration is the conditions in which the diver will be using the scuba diving wetsuit. The conditions will naturally determine the desired thickness, and related functionality of the new purchase.

Many people mistakenly believe that diving in so called warm water conditions, does not necessarily facilitate the need for a scuba diving wetsuit, because they believe that you warm water will not lead to the loss of any body heat.

This is in fact incorrect, due to the fact that the water in which we swim or dive actually acts as a conductor of heat away from the body.

Due to the advancement of technology of the wetsuit has become somewhat of a technological marvel, incorporating the latest developments in both materials and technology, which provides a better fitting and functional wetsuit. In understanding the function of a wetsuit, you will be well equipped to making an informed decision on your desired purchase.

In layperson's terms, the wetsuit offers a layer of protection around the body, which in turn prevents the loss of body heat to the surrounding water. This has the benefit of allowing you to dive longer, and depending on which suit you use can also aid in diving in colder water conditions. One of the main points in selecting a scuba diving wetsuit, is that of selecting the right size and fit; which should be relatively tight, but not too tight that it becomes uncomfortable.

The fact that the scuba diving wetsuit must be tight is in order to prevent as much water entering the suit as possible. This is because the neoprene rubber, that the suit is made out of, essentially traps the layer of water that is heated by the body, which forms the mentioned layer of protection from the cold. Any water that enters the wetsuit will therefore defeat the object of that layer of protection.

The thickness of the scuba diving wetsuit is extremely relevant to the conditions that you will be diving in. The colder the water conditions the thicker the suit, assuming you will predominantly be diving in these conditions then such a suit would be recommended. However if you will be mostly frequenting warm water conditions, then a thinner suit would be advisable. There is a large range of thicknesses and sizes available in terms of the selection of a scuba diving wetsuit.

Before rushing into the purchase of a suit, make sure you understand the exact functionality will require in terms of the thickness and size so that you may enjoy the full use of the purchase of your new scuba diving wetsuit.
