Why do wet suits now have zippers on the back when they used to be on the front?

Surfing is mainly what wetsuits are for. It is very uncomftarble to be laying on a surfboard with a zipper digging into you. To avoid this they put it on the back.

A wet suit with a zipper on the back is design for surfing. Most of the time you are laying on the board and the zipper in front is uncomfortable, so wet suit manufacturers that want to sell to surfers moved the zipper to the back and attached a leash that you can pull it closed with.
Most SCUBA diving wet suits still have the zippers where it is easy to open and close your self, like in the front of the suit.
